Chronic life stress and ignoring health are the greatest threats to men’s health

Chronic life stress and ignoring health are the greatest threats to men's health

A psychiatrist and member of the Psychos research center at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, warning about the consequences of chronic life stress on men, stated: Many men, due to cultural beliefs and economic and social responsibilities, do not take early signs of anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and mental burnout seriously and only consult a specialist when the problem has reached an advanced stage.

According to the university web-day reporter, Dr. Ali Nazeri Astaneh, a psychiatrist and member of the Psychos research center at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, pointed to the heavy pressures of life on men and said: The greatest threat to men's health is chronic life stress accompanied by ignoring their own health.

He added: Many Iranian men consider themselves responsible for providing for their families and, in tense economic and social conditions, carry a heavy burden of worries alone. This chronic pressure can manifest as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, occupational burnout, and even cardiovascular diseases.

Men do not take early signs seriously

A member of the Psychos research center at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences stated: The main problem is that many men do not take early symptoms seriously and only visit a doctor when the problem has reached an advanced stage.

Consulting a mental health specialist is not a sign of weakness

Referring to the role of culture in forming this situation, Dr. Nazeri Astaneh said: Many men still hold the belief that they must always be strong, not show their discomfort, and solve problems alone; whereas consulting a mental health specialist is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of responsibility and awareness of one's own health and family.

He noted: Just as we visit a doctor for chest pain, we should also seek help from a specialist for anxiety, depression, or mental burnout. The earlier the visit, the simpler and more successful the treatment will be.

Three important solutions for maintaining men's mental health

In another part of his remarks, the psychiatrist listed three important solutions for maintaining men's mental health: Regular physical activity, even a 30-minute daily walk, can have a significant impact on mood, anxiety, and physical health. Additionally, maintaining human connections and conversing with a spouse, friends, or trusted individuals are important protective factors for mental health.

He continued: Paying attention to sleep and sufficient rest is also of great importance, as chronic insomnia is a significant factor in increasing anxiety, irritability, and reducing quality of life.

The necessity of discussing emotions and visiting a therapist

Dr. Nazeri Astaneh continued by emphasizing the need for more serious attention to men's mental health, saying: Men's mental health and hygiene are important issue that affects all aspects of their personal and social lives, and despite its great importance, it has been far from sufficient societal attention for years.

He added: To maintain their mental health, men should expand their circle of communication with others, talk more about their feelings, and seek help from a therapist if necessary. According to this psychiatrist, mental hygiene and health help men maintain a balance between their inner feelings and outer behavior.

A member of the Psychos research center at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences stated: A man's outer and inner worlds may differ greatly, but men who possess healthier and more adaptive thoughts and behaviors generally have better mental health.

Seek help if symptoms of anxiety and depression are observed

Dr. Nazeri Astaneh also emphasized: If an individual is concerned about the presence of a mental health problem, it is best to first consult a general practitioner and, if signs of depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric problems are observed, certainly seek help from a specialist.

Noting that seeking mental health services may be daunting for some, he remarked: Many people, after talking to a specialist or therapist and receiving professional help and support, realize that this action can make a big difference in their lives.
