University History
The University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences was established on November 1, 1992, based on the resolution of the Council for Expansion of Medical Sciences Universities of the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, to respond to the country's needs in training specialized human resources in the fields of rehabilitation sciences, social health, and mental health.
The activities of this university began with the establishment of the Social Work department and gradually expanded with the development of various disciplines and educational departments. Currently, the university, with 23 educational departments, 9 research centers, and more than 200 faculty members, is responsible for training 2,000 students, more than 65 percent of whom are enrolled in graduate studies.
As the only specialized university in the country in the field of rehabilitation and social health, the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, in addition to carrying out its educational and research missions, provides specialized and subspecialized services in the fields of rehabilitation, mental health, and social health to the community through two teaching and specialized hospitals and one medical-rehabilitation center under its coverage. These centers, while providing a platform for practical training for students, play an effective role in promoting society's physical, mental, and social health.
Since 1995, this university has been managing the country's largest psychiatric hospital, with a history of more than a century (established in 1918). This center, which currently operates as the Razi Psychiatric Educational, Research, and Treatment Center, is considered the largest academic and specialized psychiatric center in the country, with more than 1,200 active beds, providing extensive diagnostic, therapeutic, educational, and research services for mental disorders and neuropsychiatric diseases.
Another important achievement of the university is the completion and launch of Rofeideh Rehabilitation Hospital in 2015. With more than 80 active beds, this center is considered the first specialized rehabilitation hospital in the country and provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to inpatient and outpatient patients in acute and chronic stages, utilizing specialized and subspecialized teams and advanced equipment.
In line with the development of specialized rehabilitation services and education, Sina Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Center was established and launched in the Yaftabad area of Tehran with principal approval in 2025. With a built-up area of approximately 4,000 square meters and relying on the scientific and specialized capacities of the university's faculty members and educational and research departments, this center provides daily educational, therapeutic, and rehabilitation services with a modern approach.
Additionally, in 2015, the university succeeded in obtaining the title deed and construction permit for the Late Akhavan Comprehensive Rehabilitation Clinic in the Monirieh area of Tehran. This complex, with a built-up area of more than 9,000 square meters, is designed as one of the largest comprehensive rehabilitation centers in the country, and its implementation is currently underway.
Today, relying on its educational, research, therapeutic, and social capacities, the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences plays a pivotal role in the development of knowledge, training specialized human resources, and improving the health and quality of life for individuals with special needs and various segments of society.
