Physiotherapy, the Forgotten Key in Type 2 Diabetes Treatment
Physiotherapy, the Forgotten Key in Type 2 Diabetes Treatment
On the occasion of National Diabetes Week (November 9–15), Dr. Nahid Rahmani, a faculty member of the Physiotherapy Department at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, emphasized the essential role of physiotherapy in controlling and preventing Type 2 diabetes complications.
According to a report by the university’s Web Day correspondent, Dr. Nahid Rahmani noted the rising prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in society and stated that this disease cannot be controlled with medication and diet alone; it requires a multifaceted, ongoing program in which physiotherapy plays a central role.
She added: The specialized physiotherapy exercises help improve glucose metabolism and increase insulin sensitivity, preventing the disease from advancing to more complex stages. These interventions not only stabilize blood sugar levels but also improve overall body health.
Explaining the common complications among diabetic patients, the faculty member of the Physiotherapy Department said: diabetic neuropathy, balance problems, and mobility limitations are among the most frequent reasons that bring patients to physiotherapy. Balance, stretching, and strengthening exercises, along with manual therapy and electrotherapy, are highly effective in reducing pain, increasing proprioception, and preventing falls.
Emphasizing the preventive aspects of physiotherapy, she added: Physiotherapists, by designing personalized programs, help patients maintain an appropriate weight, improve cardiopulmonary function, and enhance quality of life. This approach provides a stable support in the long-term management of diabetes.
Physiotherapy as a lasting therapeutic component in disease management
Dr. Rahmani concluded: During National Diabetes Week, we should remind everyone that physiotherapy is not just a complement to treatment or a single exercise or sport, but a lasting therapeutic component in disease management and part of the treatment pathway that improves patients’ quality of life and lifespan.
