The Gap in Specialized Literature on Geriatric Economics in Iran Filled with the Publication of a Four-Volume Set
With the aim of scientifically examining the shifts in Iran's population structure and their consequences for welfare and economic systems, the four-volume set Economics and Aging, written by Dr. Mehdi Basakha, Director of the Research Center for Social Determinants of Health at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, has been published.
According to the university's web correspondent, Dr. Mehdi Basakha, Director of the Research Center for Social Determinants of Health and a faculty member of the university, referring to the country's recent demographic changes, stated: Iran is experiencing one of the most significant demographic transitions of recent decades. The decline in fertility rates and the increase in life expectancy have led to a change in the age structure of the population and a rapid increase in the proportion of the elderly; a phenomenon that is not only a demographic shift but also a broad challenge for the economic structure, social welfare, and the country's policymaking systems.
Lack of Specialized Persian Resources: The Primary Motivation for Authoring the Economics and Aging Set
Emphasizing the necessity of expanding studies in this field, Dr. Basakha stated: While a large portion of studies in Iran focus on the health and welfare dimensions of the elderly, the field of geriatric economics and the examination of the mutual effects of age changes on economic variables and macro-policies still require the development of specialized literature and comprehensive resources.
In this regard, he announced the publication of the Economics and Aging book series, adding: Given the lack of specialized Persian resources in this field, this set has been prepared in four volumes with the aim of opening new paths for researchers and policymakers.

The faculty member of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, introducing this scientific work, added: This specialized set consists of four volumes, each focusing on one aspect of this phenomenon:
Volume One: Economics and Aging: Theories
Volume Two: Economics and Aging: Policy and Application
Volume Three: Economics and Aging: Long-Term Care and Financing
Volume Four: Economics and Aging: Political Economy (Forthcoming)
This set, published by Sepid Publication, aims to provide a comprehensive explanation of the economic consequences of demographic changes and offer theoretical tools to address the challenges of pension funds and the health system.
The Necessity of a Realistic Perspective in Welfare Policymaking
Regarding the importance of this work and the need to focus on this field, Dr. Basakha noted: We face a situation where policymaking to manage population aging, without a precise understanding of its economic consequences, will encounter serious and unpredictable challenges. This set of books is not merely a scientific work, but an effort to fill the existing gap in Persian literature and provide a platform for a deeper understanding of the interaction between economic variables and structural population changes.
He concluded by stating: Our goal is to help the scientific community and decision-makers, by providing specialized resources, prepare to manage potential crises resulting from population aging, with a realistic view of economic dimensions and welfare policies.
