The Necessity of Fundamental Transformation in Physiotherapy: From Transitioning to Community-based Physiotherapy to Active Presence in the Family Physician Plan

The Director of the Physiotherapy Department of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, at the Spine Specialized Seminar, emphasized the necessity of transitioning from traditional physiotherapy to community-based physiotherapy and strengthening the role of this field in the health system and the National Document for the Elderly.

According to the university's web correspondent, Dr. Mohammad Ali Mohseni Bandpei, the Director of the Physiotherapy Department of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, at the 26th Spine Specialized Seminar, referring to the significant position of physiotherapy in Iran's health system, called for a fundamental transformation in the treatment and research approaches of this field.

The Necessity of Attention to Spine Health in the Elderly

Referring to the challenges facing the elderly, he emphasized the importance of serious monitoring of spinal disorders in this age group and added: Given the increasing treatment needs, establishing specialized centers for managing spinal disorders in the elderly, especially at the provincial level, will be one of our executive priorities.

Dr. Mohseni also mentioned the prominent role of specialists in drafting the National Document for the Elderly, which is underway at the Medical Academy.

Transition from Academic Physiotherapy to Community-based Physiotherapy

Criticizing the gap between laboratory findings and the real needs of society, he said: We must move from the stage of mere knowledge production toward community-based physiotherapy. The goal is to break down the walls so that the data produced in research centers is placed directly at the service of society and for solving people's real problems, such as low back pain among different segments of the population.

The Role of the Physiotherapist in the New Structure of the Health System

Referring to the transformation in the structure of the health system, Dr. Mohseni spoke of the movement of physiotherapists from lower levels toward more specialized levels and integration at higher academic levels, and added: We must strive so that physiotherapists, like other specialists, play an active role in the family physician structure, so that we can be present at all levels of society's health services.

Emphasis on Scientific Continuity and Support for New Figures

In conclusion, Dr. Mohseni Bandpei, expressing appreciation for the holding of this seminar and the active role of Iran's national physiotherapy organization, emphasized the importance of continuity between different generations, from veteran professors to students and young figures, and noted: Holding such meetings to introduce new figures and transfer up-to-date knowledge is a requirement for the evolution of this field in the country.

It is worth mentioning that the 26th Specialized Physiotherapy of the Spine Seminar, focusing on modern approaches including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and advanced technologies, and introducing the latest achievements in spine treatments, is being held on the 23rd and 24th of Mehr of this year at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences.
