Addiction prevention through conferences and media has failed only families can prevent the fall of youth
Dr. Omid Masah, an addiction researcher at the Center for Substance Abuse Research of university of social welfare and rehabilitation sciences, warned about the increasing risk of substance use among youth due to economic and social pressures, emphasizing the inefficiency of prevention programs that rely solely on external environments, and said: In the absence of sufficient support systems, the family is the last and most powerful refuge to prevent children from falling into the trap of addiction.
According to the university web-day reporter, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Dr. Omid Masah, an addiction researcher at the Center for Substance Abuse Research of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, emphasized the need for an immediate review of addiction prevention approaches with a realistic view of the current social conditions.
Referring to how current factors such as psychological pressure, insecurity, unemployment, economic inflation, and social abnormalities have affected many families, he said: In such an atmosphere, the increased risk of substance use among adolescents and youth is not just a possibility, but an expected reality; especially when easy access to various types of drugs, stimulants, and new chemical compounds has doubled the threats.
Prevention programs remain ineffective
Stating that prevention programs in schools, universities, neighborhoods, and media are essential, this addiction researcher added: However, these programs alone are not sufficient and, in practice, are not continuously followed up or implemented as they should be. Global
Experience has shown that in low-income and developing countries, family-centered programs can play a key role in reducing high-risk behaviors at lower cost and with greater sustainability
.
Family is the first and last line of defense
Dr. Masah identified the family as the first and closest environment for personality formation, a sense of security, problem-solving skills, and instilling hope in children, stating: In Iran, the family remains the most important emotional and social refuge for children. No institution is as caring, concerned, and responsible for the future of children as the family; therefore, one should not wait for interventions from external institutions, as it is sometimes too late for official interventions
Prevention from the dining table to a secure relationship
Emphasizing that addiction prevention can begin with the simplest daily behaviors, he stated: Sharing a meal, listening without judgment, intimate conversation, being aware of friends and the child's concerns, creating order combined with affection, and conveying the message that you are important to us are among the behaviors that can play a very effective deterrent role.
In conclusion, this addiction researcher noted: Successful prevention does not necessarily begin with expensive programs and large conferences; sometimes, this defensive barrier is formed from a shared meal, a calm conversation, and a secure family relationship.
