Air pollution: a serious threat and a weapon of war against human health

The Deputy for Human Environmental Health at the Department of Environmental Protection emphasized at the World Environment Health Day symposium that air pollution is not merely a simple environmental issue, but today it is recognized as a weapon of war, and clean air is a fundamental need for human life.

According to a report by web day University journalist, Dr. Sedigheh Torabi, Deputy for Human Environmental Health at the Department of Environmental Protection, spoke at the World Environment Health Day Symposium, held on Mehr 5 (September 27) at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, outlining a summary of measures and air quality management programs in the current government and stated: “The significance of air pollution as a vital and life-saving factor for humans is clear, and today air pollution is presented as a weapon of war.”

She added, Clean air is not a fantasy, it is a fundamental need. Given the importance of air pollution in megacities and its impact on personal, economic, and social life, health, and the death of millions of people per year according to the World Health Organization, this issue is fundamental.”

Referring to the implementation of the Clean Air Act across the country, the Deputy for Human Environmental Health said, “We have decided to prioritize megacities with poor air quality and implement the law based on that. Several working groups within the Environmental Protection Organization deal with the issue of air pollution, and according to their assessments, Ahvaz, Isfahan, Tehran, Arak, Karaj, and Mashhad are the most polluted cities.”

Dr. Torabi added, “Air pollution is the result of numerous actions taken over the past years therefore, we should not expect it to be resolved in a short period. We are moving based on prioritization and will strive for the executive agencies to perform their duties properly so that the outcome is satisfactory.”

Referring to the main pillars of managing air pollution emissions, she called for directing research toward the topic of air pollution and its impacts on human health and said: “We hope that with data-based research and with the participation of research centers, we can pursue the issue of air pollution more vigorously and witness its effective results in megacities.”
