Audiology Board Members Emphasize Development of Clinical Training and Strengthening the Position of Rehabilitation Fields
During the visit of the Audiology Board members to the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, the necessity of upgrading the status of rehabilitation fields, the importance of focusing on genetics in the prevention of hearing loss and deafness, and the key role of the Doctor of Professional Studies degree in strengthening clinical and research services were discussed.
According to the report from the university's web correspondent, a meeting and visit by the members of the Audiology Board was held, attended by the Vice Chancellor for Education, the Department Head, and a group of faculty members from the Audiology Department of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, focusing on the clinical aspects of this field.
The Necessity of Attention to Rehabilitation Fields and Existing Challenges
Dr. Hamidreza Khoramkhorshid, the University's Vice Chancellor for Education, in his remarks regarding the fundamental importance of rehabilitation fields in the health system, stated: Although rehabilitation fields play a vital role in community health, unfortunately, their precise position within the health system structure has not yet been properly defined, and the insufficient expansion of these fields is due to the inadequate attention of some stakeholders.
With a specialized view on the field of genetics, he added: From the perspective of genetic research, one of the major challenges in the field of hearing is the direct link between consanguineous marriages and the occurrence of hearing loss and deafness in subsequent generations; therefore, genetic counseling must be one of the main pillars of preventive interventions and the management of hearing problems.
The Vice Chancellor for Education also emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and preventing delays in therapeutic interventions, considering it an undeniable necessity in the field of audiology.
Referring to the challenge of insufficient funding for providing advanced equipment, and expressing hope for future support, Dr. Khoramkhorshid emphasized: The University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, with its core mission in the fields of rehabilitation sciences, mental health, and social health, will always support these vital disciplines.
The Role of Rehabilitation Centers in Promoting Research and Service Delivery
Dr. Mahna Javanbakht, Head of the Audiology Department at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, while describing the educational and research status of students and faculty members, pointed to the research capabilities of this department and the university's cooperation agreements with reputable centers such as the Iran Cochlear Implant Center and other specialized centers.
Emphasizing the key role of hospitals affiliated with the university, she said: The referral section of Rofeideh Rehabilitation Hospital, as a recognized hub in the country, faces a high volume of patients in various rehabilitation fields, including audiology.
The Head of the Audiology Department added: This volume of clients provides a unique opportunity to conduct theses, write scientific articles, and strengthen the clinical skills of specialists and students, which will ultimately enhance the scientific status of this field.
The Transformative Role of the Doctor of Professional Studies in Enhancing Clinical Services
Following this meeting, the board members, recognizing the importance of the Audiology Doctor of Professional Studies degree, emphasized the need to replace or supplement past educational approaches.
Given the urgent need of society for specialized clinical services, the board members considered the design of the Doctor of Professional Studies degree as a response to the real needs of the labor market and society. They regarded this degree as a step toward having graduates focus more on practical and clinical skills and even establishing this department as hospital-based faculty.
It was also emphasized during the meeting that the implementation of specific protocols, accurate reporting, and step-by-step history-taking of hearing patients by specialists in this field has a significant impact on the treatment process and the improvement of patient conditions.
Visit to the University's Educational and Research Infrastructures
At the end of the meeting, the board members visited various sections of the Audiology Department, the university's skills laboratory, the Musculoskeletal Research Center, the Audiology Center located in Rofeideh Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Sina Rehabilitation Center. The existing capacities of these centers for the further development of clinical and research activities were reviewed.
