Career success and wealth do not guarantee successful aging
The President of the Iranian Gerontological Association, emphasizing that the quality of life in old age is the result of decisions and lifestyle during middle age, stated that career success or wealth alone does not guarantee successful aging, and individuals should, just as they invest in their financial assets, also plan for their physical, mental, and brain health, and social relationships.
According to the university web-day reporter, Dr. Ahmad Delbari, a faculty member at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, referring to his two decades of experience dealing with both successful and unsuccessful elderly people, revealed a hidden reality in modern life and said that career success or wealth does not necessarily guarantee quality of life in old age.
He added that many individuals who were highly influential during their working years experience loneliness and a lack of purpose after retirement. In contrast, those with more ordinary economic circumstances enjoy a more joyful old age due to social support networks and strong family relationships.
Aging does not start at 60
The President of the Iranian Gerontological Association clarified that aging is not a sudden event, but rather the culmination of lifestyle and decisions made during middle age, and aging begins in the same years that we make decisions for our future.
He continued that if we want to remain independent and active during old age, we must spend time and resources on our brain, mental, and physical health, and social relationships to the same extent that we invest in our bank accounts.
The necessity of changing the perspective on investment
Referring to the upcoming demographic shifts in Iran, this university professor reminded that true reserves for old age are not limited to purchasing real estate and gold; rather, health reserves, which include continuous learning, flexibility to changes, and maintaining social activities, are the key to quality of life in the final years of life.
Dr. Delbari concluded by noting that aging does not create a new personality for a person, but is merely a mirror that reflects the results of our choices and habits from the past several decades; therefore, planning for old age must be prioritized in each individual's decisions today.
