False advertising regarding the harmlessness of vapes threatens the health of the younger generation
An addiction researcher, emphasizing the necessity of public awareness about the risks of modern tobacco products, warned: Misleading advertisements regarding the harmlessness of vapes and e-cigarettes have seriously endangered the health of adolescents and young adults.
According to a report by the university's Web Day reporter, Dr. Omid Masah, an addiction researcher at the Drug Abuse Research Center of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, stated on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day: Today is a vital opportunity to review lifestyles and promote public awareness regarding the deadly consequences of tobacco use.
He added: Every year, millions of people worldwide lose their lives due to cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and various types of cancers caused by tobacco, even though these deaths are entirely preventable.
Quitting tobacco: an investment in future health
Referring to the destructive effects of secondhand smoke on those around them, especially children and pregnant women, Dr. Masah stated: Scientific evidence clearly shows that quitting tobacco at any age is an investment in future health.
He continued: Improvement in heart and lung function begins just a few weeks after quitting; therefore, utilizing professional counseling and therapeutic support is the key to success on this path.
Warning against the expansion of electronic cigarettes, vapes, and pod use
In another part of his remarks, addressing one of the major public health concerns, this addiction researcher said: In recent years, the alarming expansion of electronic cigarettes, vape, and pod use among adolescents and young adults has turned into a crisis.
Dr. Masah added: Contrary to misleading advertisements that present these products as harmless, many of them contain high levels of nicotine, which not only creates rapid addiction but also causes serious damage to brain growth and development during the sensitive period of adolescence.
The necessity of educating families and schools to prevent use
He clarified: The vapor produced by these devices contains unknown chemical compounds that pose a serious threat to respiratory and cardiovascular health.
The addiction researcher at the Drug Abuse Research Center of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences emphasized: Educating families and schools to prevent the initiation of using these products is one of our primary strategies at the Drug Abuse Research Center to protect the health of future generations.
Tobacco control: a shared social responsibility
Concluding by inviting all members of society and social institutions to synergize towards tobacco control, Dr. Masah noted: Promoting a healthy lifestyle and supporting preventive policies is our collective responsibility to bring about a more dynamic and healthier society for future generations by encouraging individuals to quit and raising awareness among the younger generation.
