Head of the Department of Audiology at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, noting the high prevalence of hearing impairment in the country, warned about the decreasing age of onset of this condition, particularly among adolescents, and the inappropriate use of headphones. She emphasized the necessity of early hearing screening and timely interventions.
According to the university’s Web Desk, Dr. Mahna Javanbakht, Head of the Audiology Department and a faculty member at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, spoke on National Audiology Day (August 1) about the key role of this profession in the country’s health system. She highlighted the significant prevalence of hearing disorders across age groups, especially infants and the elderly, and added that audiology colleagues and students in the field should celebrate National Audiology Day.
In her message, she stated: “August 1, National Audiology Day, is a valuable opportunity to honor the dedicated efforts of specialists in this field, whose knowledge, commitment, and humanity play an indispensable role in advancing society’s hearing health and improving the lives of those with hearing disorders.”
She underscored the importance of hearing as a fundamental sense for communication, learning, and social participation, noting: “Harm to this sense can have profound consequences for an individual's personal and social life. Audiologists, through precise assessments, prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of hearing and balance disorders, play a crucial role in restoring this precious asset.”
The audiology expert also emphasized the university’s position as a leading institution in training skilled professionals in audiology, stating: “This university has consistently advanced scientific development, enhanced professional skills, and promoted the rightful standing of audiology within the country’s health system.”
Finally, she extended congratulations once again to the national audiology community and prayed for their continued success, health, and dignity in serving society.
Dr. Javanbakht warned about the decreasing age of onset of hearing loss in the country, stating, “Presbycusis typically begins after the age of 45, but recent research shows that even middle school students are experiencing varying degrees of this problem. Incorrect use of headphones and exposure to loud noises are among the main contributing factors.”
She recommended: “The output level of headphones should not exceed 60 percent of the device’s maximum volume, and continuous listening should not exceed 60 minutes. In addition, a person should be able to hear surrounding sounds without removing the headphones.”
At the end, she announced the upcoming free hearing assessment and counseling program, along with a balance test, conducted by the Audiology Department of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences. at Rofeideh Hospital on Saturday, 11 Mordad. She added, “University staff and other interested individuals can take advantage of this opportunity to assess their hearing status and receive professional guidance.
