Hypertension The Silent Killer and a Leading Cause of Premature Death Worldwide

Hypertension The Silent Killer and a Leading Cause of Premature Death Worldwide

On the occasion of World Hypertension Day (May 17), a faculty member of the University's Nursing Department emphasized the vital importance of awareness and regular blood pressure monitoring. She stated Hypertension remains one of the most significant preventable causes of premature death globally. Early detection, lifestyle modification, and consistent treatment can prevent many of its serious complications.

According to a report by Web Day University's correspondent, Dr. Elnaz Talebi, a faculty member of the Nursing Department, noted on World Hypertension Day: This global observance aims to raise public awareness regarding hypertension, promote preventive measures, encourage early diagnosis, facilitate effective disease control, and advocate for targeted interventions at the individual, social, and health system levels.

Highlighting that hypertension is still a leading preventable cause of early mortality, she added: Estimates suggest that approximately 1.4 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension. In Iran, the prevalence of this disease is reported to be around 23% among the 30–55 age group and approximately 50% among those over the age of 55.

Dr. Talebi continued: Despite the availability of effective and affordable treatments, many sufferers remain unaware of their condition, and only about one-quarter of patients successfully achieve optimal blood pressure control. This underscores the urgent need for increased focus on education, screening, and continuous follow-up within the health system.

Describing hypertension as a silent killer, Dr. Talebi explained: This condition is often asymptomatic, yet it can significantly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and premature death. Therefore, early diagnosis, regular blood pressure measurement, and sustained treatment can prevent many severe complications.

Referring to this year's World Hypertension Day theme, Controlling Hypertension: A Shared Responsibility—Regular Blood Pressure Monitoring is the Key to Overcoming the Silent Killer, the faculty member remarked: This slogan signifies that controlling this disease is not solely the responsibility of the individual; families, society, healthcare professionals, and health systems all share a collective responsibility.

She identified regular blood pressure measurement as the first step in the prevention and control of the disease, adding: Everyone must be aware of their blood pressure numbers. Furthermore, lifestyle modifications including healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, reducing alcohol consumption, and proper medication adherence can play a crucial role in preventing and managing hypertension.

Dr. Talebi noted: Many people living with hypertension are unaware of their status; therefore, periodic screening and blood pressure measurement are indispensable. Fortunately, existing treatments are effective and accessible, and when taken regularly, they can prevent severe complications.

She concluded by emphasizing: Controlling hypertension requires long-term care, continuous access to healthcare services and medication, and regular follow-ups. In this regard, prioritizing health equity, strengthening primary healthcare systems, and ensuring universal access to diagnosis and treatment are essential to reducing health inequalities.
