Necessity of Ethical and Legal Considerations in the Population Growth and Family Support Plan

The issue of population growth and family support is one of the pressing topics in society, and the Population Growth and Family Support Plan was approved by the honorable representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly on March 16, 2020 (26 Esfand 1399) and sent to the Guardian Council for final approval. Regardless of the expert and legal processes conducted in the design and approval of this plan, as well as the events and controversies that followed, ethical and legal considerations in the Population Growth and Family Support Plan are essential.

According to a report by the University News Desk, Dr. Saeed Birudian, President of the Iranian Medical Ethics Association and Scientific Secretary of this conference, spoke about this event, which was hosted by the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences on October 16 (24 Mehr). He stated: This scientific event aims to raise professional awareness and clarify contemporary ethical issues in medicine, providing a valuable opportunity for dialogue and the exchange of views among professionals.

He added: The Iranian Medical Ethics Association has organized various continuing education programs in the field of medical ethics in collaboration with different universities across the country to ensure that the level of knowledge in this rapidly evolving field reaches the target community fairly and equitably.

Dr. Birudian noted: Today marks the anniversary of the founding of the Iranian Medical Ethics Association, and we organized this one-day conference in three separate halls to witness the broad scope of the program. Topics include professional ethics in accidents and disasters, informed patient consent in medical interventions, issues related to ethics in the era of innovation and technology, ethics in dentistry, pharmacology, and medical equipment, and another very important topic titled Ethical and Legal Considerations in Population Growth for discussion and exchange of views.

The President of the Iranian Medical Ethics Association added: After the law, the Population Growth Law, was enacted by the Parliament as a seven-year and temporary measure and slated for revision, this law requires scientific discussion and dialogue. In this scientific event, we pursued that, with specialized panels and qualitative, discussion-driven debates on urgent topics, demonstrating that we have moved beyond rhetoric. We hope that scientific and rational discussion and exchange of views in this area will be opened more widely.

The Scientific Secretary of this conference announced the presence of presidents of various scientific associations at this event. He said the event is hosted by the University of Rehabilitation Sciences and Social Health, and addressing ethical and legal considerations in the field of rehabilitation, given the community’s needs and the target population that is dealing with some form of disability, is among the association’s other objectives.

The conference will include three specialized sessions, held in the following order: Ethics and Professional Commitment (ID 240438), Population Growth and Ethical Considerations (ID 240435), and Principles of Ethics and Rights in Pharmacy and Medical Equipment (ID 240537).

Birudian also stated: Simultaneously with this program, the Ordinary General Assembly of the Iranian Medical Ethics Association will be held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the Shamlou Hall of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences.
