Nurses are Considered Strategic Facilitators in Crisis and Disaster Management

The Secretary of the Nursing Board of the Ministry of Health, at the scientific conference Empowering Nursing Staff, emphasized the distinction between patient management

under normal conditions and during a crisis, identifying nurses as the main pillars and effective facilitators in confronting emergencies

and disasters.

According to the report from the university's web correspondent, Dr. Masoud Fallahi, a faculty member of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Secretary of the Nursing Board of the Ministry of Health, addressing specialists and nurses from the country's top 10 hubs (Tehran, Iran, Shahid Beheshti, and the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences medical universities), stated while explaining the difference between crisis conditions and daily hospital incidents: What distinguishes crisis conditions from usual incidents is the going beyond routine coping mechanisms. In crisis conditions, events exceed daily capabilities and require specialized, multifaceted management that goes beyond normal protocols.

By classifying crises into natural, social, and life-altering incidents (such as migration or environmental changes), Dr. Fallahi clarified that a correct understanding of the nature of a crisis is the first step toward effective intervention. Nurses must, with precise knowledge, monitor

supply and demand during sensitive moments and have an established operational plan in place

.

He identified accurate situational assessment, identification of the core problem, emotion management, and the formulation of an operational plan as the four main pillars of crisis management, adding: Alongside technical knowledge, the individual characteristics of the nurse, including personality, resilience, and flexibility, play a key role in navigating a crisis.

The Secretary of the Nursing Board of the Ministry of Health emphasized: A nurse who maintains composure, mastery, and calmness in difficult conditions transforms into a stress-reducing role and, through optimal management of time and resources, not only provides tranquility to patients but also, as an effective facilitator, assists the entire health system in passing through the crisis.

It is worth noting that this scientific event, which was met with widespread interest from students and nursing specialists, emphasized the necessity of reviewing educational programs and increasing the specialized skills of nurses to enhance resilience against disasters.
