Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy: Key Fields in Improving Individuals with Autism

The Chancellor of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences stated that, alongside various rehabilitation specialties, occupational therapy and speech therapy are among the most crucial and specialized fields in enhancing the well-being of individuals with autism.

According to the university’s news reporter, Dr. Seyed Ali Hosseini, Chancellor of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, expressed his appreciation during the opening ceremony of the First Specialized Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders. He highlighted that the event was organized through the efforts of Dr. Akbar Fehimi, in collaboration with dedicated occupational therapy students and the university’s Occupational Therapy Scientific Society, which is commendable.

Dr. Hosseini emphasized that autism spectrum disorder is a significant and attention-worthy area within rehabilitation sciences, requiring a multidisciplinary approach involving both rehabilitation and medical specialists to improve outcomes.

He stated, “Alongside various rehabilitation disciplines, occupational therapy and speech therapy are cornerstone and highly specialized fields in enhancing the well-being of individuals with autism.”

He added, “Rehabilitation professionals have a direct responsibility in the field of autism. Scientific and professional associations and universities, and research centers must pursue autism as a specialized topic to keep practitioners well-informed and current with the latest scientific developments.”

A faculty member of the Department of Occupational Therapy at the university explained, “The notion that individuals with autism are unchangeable is not accepted in rehabilitation. The most severe cases of autism, when addressed with scientifically-based, evidence-supported programs by occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, and child psychiatrists, can be redirected toward effective treatment and rehabilitation, ultimately benefiting both the individuals and their families.”

The first conference dedicated to autism spectrum disorders is scheduled to take place on May 1-2 at the USWR. The event will focus on topics such as innovative diagnostic methods, sensory and cognitive challenges, and the role of play and leisure activities in autism. It aims to explore various dimensions of the disorder and provide a platform for knowledge exchange among professionals and students.

This conference, organized to increase awareness and facilitate the sharing of experiences in the treatment and management of autism spectrum disorders, will address issues including modern diagnostic approaches, associated sensory and cognitive difficulties, and the importance of play and leisure in the development of children with autism.
