Occupational Therapy the Most Effective Intervention for Improving Daily Functioning in Children with Autism

 

The Head of the Occupational Therapy Department at the University, citing recent scientific findings, stated: Due to the unique patterns of sensory and cognitive symptoms in each child, occupational therapy interventions, when integrated with behavioral and environmental programs, yield the highest efficacy.

According to a report by the University Web-Day, Dr. Houshang Mirzaei, Head of the Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, stated: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition characterized by significant delays in language and social skills. Early symptoms include difficulties in eye contact, lack of response to names, limited facial expressions, deficits in interactive and symbolic play, as well as repetitive behaviors or obsessive interests. According to scientific standards, these symptoms are classified into three spectrum levels based on severity and support needs, each requiring a specialized therapeutic plan.

Etiology The Complex Interaction of Biological and Environmental Factors

Regarding the origins of autism, he noted: Experts believe there is no single cause for this disorder. Rather, it results from a combination of genetic factors (family history and mutations), advanced parental age, low birth weight, metabolic imbalances, and fetal exposure to environmental toxins or specific medications. Despite this understanding, due to its multifactorial nature, autism cannot currently be definitively prevented, although managing these factors may reduce the risk of onset.

Dr. Mirzaei added: "The latest scientific findings indicate that because the constellation of sensory and cognitive symptoms is unique to each child, occupational therapy interventions, alongside behavioral and environmental programs, possess very high efficacy. Occupational therapists, by focusing on sensory, perceptual-motor, and cognitive challenges and facilitating environmental adaptations, play a crucial role in enhancing a child's performance in daily life."

While acknowledging supportive approaches, the Head of the Occupational Therapy Department cautioned against unconventional methods such as energy healing: While such methods may be discussed in fields like spiritual therapy, no reports in credible scientific literature have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving the clinical symptoms of autism.
