Paradigm shift in mental health why selfcare is as important as treatment

The Director of the Student Counseling Center at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, emphasizing the necessity of revising the concept of mental health, described selfcare as a set of conscious strategies that play a role equal to specialized treatments in reducing anxiety and strengthening resilience.

According to a report by Web Day University's correspondent, Dr. Ashraf Akbari Dehaghi, noting the comprehensive definition of self-care, stated: Selfcare is not merely an option, but a set of conscious behaviors and strategies that an individual employs to maintain and promote their physical, psychological, and social health.

Citing definitions from the World Health Organization, she considered mental health to be a concept that goes beyond the mere absence of disease, adding: Real mental health includes the ability to manage emotions, cope with the inevitable stresses of life, function effectively, and participate actively in society.

Referring to research findings, the Director of the Student Counseling Center clarified: Selfcare plays a key role in reducing anxiety and depression, increasing life satisfaction, reducing psychological burnout, and strengthening resilience, and it is directly related to improving sleep quality and emotional regulation.

Dr. Akbari Dehaghi further categorized the dimensions of selfcare into five areas: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual, noting: Balanced attention to all these dimensions is a guarantee for improving the quality of life and maintaining the mental health of students.

In the final part of her remarks, emphasizing the role of modern techniques in this process, she said: The practice of mindfulness, or paying conscious attention to the present moment without judgment, is one of the most effective selfcare tools that can significantly help in reducing stress, controlling rumination, and improving mental health.
