Surge in Medical Capacity Threatens Public Health
Educational Deputies of Iran’s medical universities protest over overstretched admissions and lack of facilities and funding, issuing a statement.
According to the university newsroom, citing the Educational Deputy of the Ministry of Health, educational deputies from the country’s medical universities issued a statement warning about the unplanned increase in admission capacity in medical and dental programs.
Universities are experiencing severe student overcrowding, shortages of space, equipment, faculty, and educational infrastructure.
A policy of increasing capacity without guaranteed funding and support jeopardizes medical education.
Despite previous mandates to raise capacity, there has been no effective financial support for universities.
Doctor emigration, failure to recruit faculty, and brain drain among trained educators are among the outcomes of neglecting infrastructure.
Educational deputies stressed that the quality of medical education is a red line for the health system and called for an urgent meeting with Health Ministry officials, Parliament representatives, and universities to assess the situation on the ground.
The statement has been signed by the educational deputies of more than 70 medical universities and schools nationwide.
