The Beginning of the Open Science Era at the University: The Institute for the Promotion of Open and Responsible Science Was Established

The Institute for the Promotion of Open and Responsible Science (PIROS) was inaugurated at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, in the presence of the Chancellor and a group of professors and researchers, with the aim of transitioning from quantitative scientific production toward impactful, transparent, and community-centered research.

According to the university's web correspondent, Dr. Seyed Ali Hosseini, the Chancellor of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, described the opening of the Institute for the Promotion of Open and Responsible Science as a transformative step in the structure of knowledge production and academic accountability.

Referring to the university's brilliant record in producing scientific articles, he emphasized: Although the university has been a leader in producing scientific articles for many years, now, given the acceptable quantitative growth, the time has come to change our approach from a sole focus on quantity toward impact and quality.

Dr. Hosseini, referring to the role of the university's prominent professors, including Dr. Hamidreza Khanke, added: The Health Research Center in Accidents and Disasters has always been the country's policymaking arm in this field, and the presence of Dr. Khankeh as the head of the PIROS institute can be very effective in shaping a modern approach to science and the development of responsible and people-oriented science.

He considered the formation of this institute as a response to the serious concerns of professors and the urgent need of the scientific community for transparency and internal evaluations, and clarified: In the path of transitioning to the fourth generation of entrepreneurial universities, PIROS helps us to actively participate in scientific arenas while pursuing the process of evaluating and improving the quality of scientific productions with greater precision within the university.

The Socialization of Science: A Bridge Between University and Society

Continuing the ceremony, Dr. Hamidreza Khanke, a faculty member of the university and director of the Parsigostar Institute for the Promotion of Open and Responsible Science (PIROS), emphasized the necessity of the socialization of science and said: Science must be based on the correct demand of society; currently, there is a gap between the producer of science (university) and the consumer of science (society), and people do not have an effective share in the knowledge production process.

Stating that Open Science is a movement to make research, data, and software available to all levels of society, he added: In developed countries, there is no wall between the university and society; we too must simplify the language of science for society. The vision of the PIROS institute is to become one of the region's leading hubs for responsible health and biomedical research, where research—from the stage of forming the question to the publication and translation of knowledge—is conducted with a responsible approach.

The PIROS Roadmap: Toward a Transparent Research Ecosystem

Seyed Arvin Borzenji, a member of the institute's executive team and a faculty member of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, explained the goals, vision, and programs of the institute in another part of the ceremony. Emphasizing the necessity of moving toward reliable and reproducible research, he introduced the six main axes of PIROS activities as follows:

1. Responsible Research

2. Education and Empowerment

3. Quality Assurance and Reform of Incentive Systems

4. Development of Open Science Infrastructures

5. Participation of Patients and Society

6. Development of Scientific Cooperation and Policymaking

He added: The ultimate goal of PIROS is to build a research ecosystem in which research is more accurate, transparent, participatory, and ultimately more impactful. It is worth noting that the two-year roadmap of this institute includes the development of digital infrastructures, holding regional meetings, and implementing responsible research projects with the direct participation of society.
