The Responsibility of Physiotherapy Goes Beyond Pain Reduction

The Responsibility of Physiotherapy Goes Beyond Pain Reduction

At the 26th Specialized Physiotherapy of the Spine Seminar, the President of the Scientific Association of Physiotherapy emphasized a systematic approach to treatment, the production of scientific evidence, and distancing from pseudoscience.

According to the university's web correspondent, Dr. Iraj Abdollahi, President of the Iranian Scientific Association of Physiotherapy, at the 26th Specialized Physiotherapy of the Spine Seminar, which was held with the presence of professors, veterans, students, and prominent researchers in this field at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, said: This program, which is known as one of the pioneers of specialized physiotherapy seminars in the country, was held this year as well with the tireless and continuous efforts of Dr. Nooredin Karimi, the congress president, the executive committee, the scientific and executive secretaries, and the student team.

He added: The role of physiotherapy in spinal disorders is not limited to pain reduction; the main goal is to increase the patient's capability, improve motor function, return the individual to normal life, and prevent complications from recurring. Achieving these goals requires utilizing a systematic method in treatment that includes precise assessment, clinical differential diagnosis, identification of red flags and pain-generating factors, and ultimately the design and implementation of comprehensive treatment programs, including exercise therapy, patient education, manual therapy, and electrotherapy modalities.

The Necessity of Moving Toward Strong Scientific Evidence and Avoiding Pseudoscience

Dr. Abdollahi described one of the important axes raised at this event as the necessity of aligning clinical activities with the latest research and credible scientific evidence (Evidence-based), and said: The physiotherapy community must focus on methods that have strong evidence for effectiveness and avoid methods with weak evidence or those on the borderline of pseudoscience.

He considered the strengthening of interdisciplinary teamwork while preserving the legal duties and authorities of each discipline, and the production of indigenous scientific evidence and the drafting of specialized clinical guidelines, as a solution for enhancing the quality of treatment services.

At this congress, Dr. Abdollahi expressed appreciation for the continuity and perseverance of this scientific event under difficult and uneven security and economic conditions, as it has kept this scientific banner raised until its 26th edition and has provided the ground for the further flourishing of the country's physiotherapy community.
