The Silent Suffering of the Elderly During Crises

A University Professor's Warning: The Silent Suffering of the Elderly During Crises // Three Key Strategies for Psychological Support in Tense Times

In days overshadowed by anxiety and instability, a professor of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences emphasizes the vital importance of daily connection, maintaining routine, and creating meaning in the lives of the elderly.

According to a report by the Webda University reporter, Dr. Nasibeh Zanjari, a faculty member of the Gerontology Department at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, stated: Despite being the pillars of calm within families during wartime due to their past experiences, the elderly themselves are highly vulnerable to serious psychological harm.

She specifically highlighted the need to support elderly individuals who are ill, living alone, disabled, or impoverished, adding that there are three primary strategies recommended for families.

The faculty member noted: Communication is your protective shield. Reduce their anxiety through daily contact and physical presence. Convey negative news in a controlled manner through reliable sources, and prevent them from being exposed to sensationalist or exaggerated reports. Additionally, practicing techniques such as deep breathing during the sound of explosions can be highly effective.

Dr. Zanjari further clarified: Routine is the antidote to anxiety; war disrupts the order of life. Strive to prevent psychological breakdown by maintaining simple routines, such as fixed times for meals and medication.

She added: Let us not forget meaning-making through compensation. When walking and social visits are restricted, provide new meaning to their lives through family games, knitting, or writing and recording memories. Documenting memories can be the best way to ward off depression and negative emotional experiences during these times.

Concluding her remarks, the gerontology specialist emphasized the importance of psychological and emotional support, stating: History will be written and read later; our duty right now is to live in the present and look after one another.
