The necessity of empathetic understanding when facing vulnerable clients / Mental health is not merely summarized by clinical symptoms

A psychiatrist and psychotherapy fellow at Razi Psychiatric Teaching Hospital, emphasizing the need to move beyond purely specialized approaches in treating vulnerable groups, identified empathetic understanding, patience in listening to clients' narratives, and attention to the role of social supports as fundamental pillars of clinical effectiveness.

According to a report by the University's Web-Day reporter, Dr. Anahita Rahmani, noting the necessity of a deeper perspective beyond purely specialized frameworks when encountering vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, stated: In interacting with these groups, knowledge, diagnostic expertise, and clinical skills form the foundation of our work; however, to approach the lived and human experience of the client, we need an element beyond that, which is empathetic understanding and a full readiness to listen to an experience that may not be familiar to us.

She described mental health in disadvantaged and vulnerable segments of society as a concept that goes beyond the outward signs of illness, adding: Mental health in these groups is not limited to the scope of clinical symptoms or physical and mental disabilities; rather, the quality of these individuals' relationship with their surrounding environment and the extent of their access to social supports play a decisive role in their sense of security and health. Therefore, for individuals living with psychiatric disorders or those requiring extra support due to physical, cognitive, or social limitations, facing external events and tensions is much more difficult and doubles their vulnerability.

Dr. Rahmani emphasized the importance of therapists' patience during the clinical intervention process, saying: Sometimes it is necessary not to rush in naming and judging people's experiences, and instead give the individual the opportunity to depict and define their lived world using their own words. As members of the mental health team, we can provide a safe space where the client is seen as a unique and valuable identity, beyond diagnostic labels and limitations.

The psychotherapy fellow, noting the heightened sensitivity of this approach during difficult turning points, clarified: On days when external crises and turmoil exacerbate underlying vulnerabilities, the effort to understand experiences from the individual's own perspective becomes twice as important; this profound attention is particularly vital when an individual cannot easily express their internal states due to communicative, cognitive, or psychological barriers.

She concluded by noting: In such a professional relationship context, alongside standard therapeutic care, the client experiences the precious sense of being understood and accepted; an experience that reduces their internal isolation and enables a reconnection with themselves and society. Although resolving all crises and environmental pressures is not within our power, through an empathetic clinical bond, an effective step can be taken toward reducing and alleviating the suffering of these clients.
