University Faculty Members Contribute to Global Reference Book on Geriatric Mental Health
A joint chapter from the international book Handbook of Psychosocial Aspects of Mental Health in Older Adults, published by Springer, has been released. The chapter was authored by Mahshid Foroughan and Vahid Rashedi, faculty members of the Gerontology Department at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences.
According to a report by Web Day University's correspondent, the chapter titled Mental Health of Older Adults in Iran: Psychosocial Perspectives and Care Systems was published by the prestigious Springer Nature. The chapter was co-authored by Dr. Mahshid Foroughan, Dr. Vahid Rashedi (faculty members of the Gerontology Department), and Ida Ghaem Magham Farahani.
The chapter aims to depict the current status of the elderly population in Iran and examine the social determinants of their mental health. In this work, the authors address the aging trends in Iran, the demographic and social characteristics of the current elderly generation, and the social support and welfare structures related to this population group.
Furthermore, the chapter explores critical issues such as ageism, elder abuse and mistreatment, the epidemiology of mental health disorders in older adults, and available mental health services. It also provides a forward-looking description and analysis of existing mental health care systems, examines the state of education and research in the fields of gerontology and geriatric mental health, and reviews national and international collaborations aimed at improving the mental health of the Iranian elderly.
The book, Handbook of Psychosocial Aspects of Mental Health in Older Adults, is considered a comprehensive and authoritative resource in the field.
