Department of Audiology
The Department of Audiology was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR) in 2009.
The department is active in teaching theoretical and clinical subjects as well as conducting high-quality research. The faculty and students are engaged in a variety of research activities. While some students have graduated and moved on, numerous students are continuing their further studies in our department. In this world-class department, all staff members are committed to exemplary professional behavior, collaboration, and support. The department welcomes local and international students at postgraduate levels.
What is Audiology?
Audiology is a branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and related disorders. As one of the main disciplines of rehabilitation, audiology involves the evaluation, treatment, and conservation of the hearing and/or balance systems of the human audio-vestibular system. Specially trained healthcare professionals known as audiologists provide this care. Audiologists can work individually or as part of a health care or rehabilitation team and use their professional skills to improve the quality of life for patients. Employing various testing strategies (e.g. hearing tests, otoacoustic emission measurements, videonystagmography, and electrophysiology tests), audiology aims to determine whether someone can hear within the normal range, and if not, which portions of hearing (high, middle, or low frequencies) are affected and to what degree. If an audiologist determines that a hearing loss or vestibular abnormality is present, he or she will provide recommendations to a patient as to what options (e.g. hearing aid, cochlear implants, appropriate medical referrals) may be of assistance.
Aims
Our vision is to train and prepare the highest quality audiology students in the world. Our mission is to introduce students to the latest world knowledge of audiology and to perform innovative research. Toward achieving the aforementioned vision and mission, our academic staff works incredibly hard to provide excellent research and dynamic education. With this aim in mind, we work in collaboration with other universities at national and international levels.
Teaching
The Department of Audiology trains postgraduate students focusing on the neuroscience of hearing, language, and balance. The students of our department have access to the comprehensive advanced study and clinical training, library, and recreation facilities of the only rehabilitation university in Iran and in the region.
