What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy as a discipline of Rehabilitation Sciences is concerned with the study, assessment, diagnosis, and management of speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. It is considered as a combination of science and art. The nature of speech therapy demands interrelationship with many disciplines including medicine, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and social sciences.

To be trained as a speech therapist, basic knowledge of neuroanatomicals, physiology of speech mechanisms, phonology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology, and psychiatry is necessary. In addition, learning the techniques of diagnosis, assessment, and therapy of speech and language disorders is one of the main objectives of the field.

A speech and language pathologist (SLP) should be familiar with the normal development of language, as well as the diagnosis of different types of abnormal development of language for assessment and therapeutic objectives. When the form of speech is more noticeable than its content, or the content is somehow distorted, then probably, some kind of speech and/or language disorder does exist. Different speech and language disorders might be observed among both children and adults, such as stuttering and articulatory problems. Communication deficits are also common in children with hearing impairment, learning disabilities, mental retardation, autism, people with CVA, and laryngectomies speakers. Any form of sensory or motor disorders may lead to some type of speech and language problems and may have an impact on the patient's communicative capacities.

Aims

When there is a speech or language problem, as a result, it may lead to aggression, and isolation, and may have an impact on the individual’s mental health, family relationships, education, and prospective social life. We aim to educate skillful graduates to prevent and manage developmental and acquired communicative disorders through proper diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
