Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics
The Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR) in 1992.
The Orthopedic Technology program trains students to work with orthopedic surgeons to treat patients in a variety of healthcare environments. This program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become qualified technical orthopedic experts. The department has a 20-year history and throughout the time our department had a significant improvement in adding the postgraduate and Ph.D. levels to the program and upgrading the curriculum to a world-class standard.
What are Orthotics and Prosthetics?
Considering the high prevalence of physical and motor disabilities and their spread among different age groups, orthotics, and prosthetics become a necessary part of managing patients with disabilities. This program trains students with the skills and knowledge to become orthopedic technicians. Orthopedic technicians manage musculoskeletal injuries in various settings such as surgical hospitals or private clinics. Applying, adjusting, and removing casts, splints, and braces are part of their job scope. They also have a significant role in educating patients to take care of themselves via the application of these devices.
Aims
The Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics aims to produce graduates who are competent and able to provide high-standard orthopedic and prosthetic services.
We utilize the latest scientific research evidence to keep our practice up to date we aim to improve the quality of life and enhance the independence of individuals with physical disability. Toward achieving the aforementioned vision and mission, our academic staff works incredibly hard to provide excellent research and dynamic education. With this aim in mind, we work in collaboration with other universities at national and international levels.

Teaching
The department seeks to develop you into a confident and competent professional by delivering technical orthopedics training from the beginning of your course till the last day of your study. The students have full access to the comprehensive advanced study, clinical training and teaching, library, and recreational facilities of the only rehabilitation university in the country and in the region.
We aim to reach this claim by introducing a varied range of management and treatment environments from a musculoskeletal clinic to a hospital ward.
Research
Research is the foundation for teaching and clinical practice in the Orthotics and Prosthetics department. Our department has an internationally recognized research program in different areas and will continue with this approach.
